Harlequins as Studio , Street and for Students later

Still thinking about easier ways to produce video. Eventually better bandwidth will take care of the upload speeds. Meanwhile need easier methods to record.

Central Exeter like other places is facing change. Harlequins is partly closed down and now expected to become Student Accommodation towards the end of 2019. Maybe some of the space could become a studio in the meantime? The photos show an area towards the middle where street space could allow a quick recording with hand held camera. Could there be short term use of a space? Who could offer some equipment? Could be sound only or stills as well as video.

Could try out the space during Exeter Arts Week, just a quick sample.

No info yet on how much retail space will be in a mix with the student accommodation. Exeter has so many projects for students it is possible they will have to offer more than just wifi to be attractive. Shared resources might include a Green Room for virtual / augmented reality and video recording. Seems a bit of a speculation but might be more expected over the next year or so. See videos below.

Possible benefit for others in Exeter would be if the Green Room was available some of the year for the public. Maybe other bits of studio. Students now produce mostly words but there may be more video or other forms of content expected. If they are in the city for accommodation maybe other resources will follow.

Exeter Street Arts continues as tag - #ExeStreetArts

Previously I have mentioned #tags and social media as an alternative to print / posters for promotion. The Exeter Street Arts event at the end of August is an example. News at the moment is that the poster in High Street near what is sometimes a calendar shop has vanished. See photo, just a bit torn off from the bottom. think I recognise the colour.

So maybe this is even more online till some point in August when posters return. There is a Spotify playlist, and Tweet links with events linked to those performing on the day.

This blog started with "wifi Exeter" so is a good place to put some links. I actually go home to edit photo on a desktop. But in theory video and blogs from the street could be in real time. Links welcome for examples.

Hustings Update, video plan

I will be taking a camera to the hustings tomorrow but not sure what to record. I think the Express and Echo will be ok with another version of a video but I am not sure how the space will work out.

Meanwhile some of the recording from a hand held camera has worked out ok. I am still interested in a YouTube channel on a new level of resources but things are ok as they are. I can link in a blog to other clips and organisations such as the Echo now have a wider range of video available.

I am also doing sound shows on Phonic FM. We cannot cover politics till after the election. Creative Commons and social media has not been a topic much anyway. Well perhaps on the sideleines but not a lot about how policy could support or improve. Maybe more possible later. A lot of it is not really about legislation, more a set of understandings that allows things to work out.

Exeter Hustings 2017

This post is about the Boat Shed Hustings for the General Election. I previously did a YouTube playlist for the Devon County Council elections. I had hoped to do another for this one but have been told it is an exclusive for Devon Live as they will do a live stream on Facebook. Since the event has now been postponed I am trying to raise some issues around this in case things might change.


Social media is now much better known than a few years ago. Newspapers have some business model problems so they have fewer reporters. They sometimes use content from public sources. The playlist I did was all Creative Commons. I don't think there has been much reuse of it but in theory there could be. The web at least started with an open approach. The theory of content marketing can come close to the idea of open access. I find that Facebook Live content can vanish after the event while YouTube is more available for mixing in a playlist with other comment. In the long run I don't see how local mainstream media will survive better with content on Facebook or YouTube unless they revise their approach to working with the public in how content is generated.

Another thing, on the DCC hustings I asked each speaker for permission as if it was a performance. I usually will take down a clip on request as people change their style or have other reasons. But I don't think a news event should have too long a delay so permission could be assumed. Is it public?

Anyway, I think meanwhile there could be various ways to continue on YouTube. I have found clips close to the announced speakers. Three from Harry Mottram who may be connected to Trinity Mirror. More info later. Suggestions welcome on clips to add. I think the production standard is not too hard to achieve. Do not break your back carrying round a tripod and lots of lights. Phone clips may be enough if the content is interesting.

Ramble about video in Exeter

This is background for the previous post about the hustings at Boat Shed. I welcome policy about government support, funding, education etc. but also wonder about how video is done with limited resources.

Previously there were the Dark Times. Bike Shed Theatre and Bar on loan to Phonic FM for a few days in August 2015. The lighting was terrible.

Recently I asked the Standup Philosopher about a new show and he told me about exeter Visual Arts as a venue. I enquired about a space to store a tripod and if they would invest in a green screen. But then a handheld approach turned out ok and I found a green door on the quay opposite the Boat Shed.

Over the summer the daylight should be ok for video. Sound may have to be recorded again in studio of Phonic FM. Guests welcome on Wild Show Thursday 10 -12 and @wenotno Tue 12 - 2.

Cultural Hustings at Boat Shed continued

I do not know much detail but there will be another hustings at the Boat Shed tomorrow evening. Part of the general election.

Previously I did some  clips from the Devon County Council hustings and put them in a playlist.

My plan is to bring a camera again and hope to get permission to upload some new clips.

Arguably this is a news event so permission could be assumed but the Boat shed policy seems to be to regard everything as a performance. works ok so far but I am trying to get some clearance ahead of time so things can work more like news.

Background issue is how the Boat Shed can work as a video studio. Can any kit be stored? I have already found out that the green doors just across the river work ok as a green screen. But what else is possible?

Playlists, Performance promo, DCC Cultural Hustings

Each of the clips from the Devon county council Cultural Hustings is now uploaded to YouTube, including the full session and there is a playlist. The playlist can be added to before the election so suggestions are welcome. Liberal Democrat for example as Vanessa Newcombe was ill at the time.

I will also look at other playlists that show what is possible with video to promote and relate to cultural events. Joseph Parsons has extended his 2017 tour from 2016 but still seems to be based in Topsham and Launceston. Sound of the Sirens are at the Phoenix soon and there is an excellent recent video from the Exeter Cathedral.

With Tubers now in Exeter there is increased interest in how online video can work. At a low level the issues are just about lighting and sound. The hustings video clips were with a hand held camera relying on the excellent sound and lighting provided. The Boat Shed could be a good base for more interviews and performances over the summer. Maybe there could be a space to store a tripod and other resources.

Issues that came up include access to broadband. Perhaps we should just accept that in Devon this happens at different rates. We have a very wide variety of acccess. But this could result in an interesting situation for amending content into different formats.

The clips are all with Creative Commons so they can be reused. Could there be more content like this? Content marketing is another aspect but the theory depends on actual content.

Mainstream media now supply clips to YouTube and other outlets. Newspapers also work with video. So there is a wide variety of content available. News and culture reporting can be part of the same developments. So much to discuss in how Devon as a locality can relate.

Reboot of blog ahead of Culture Hustings at Boat Shed

As far as I can remember this blog is fairly neutral from politics point of view. I will try to be balanced in covering the Hustings at Boat shed in Exeter for Devon County Council elections. Seems a good time to look at how content and cloud can work out as local media. I know the Bike shed Theatre plan to try out a building near the Quay over the summer so I guess the Hustings are a stage towards this.

Topics that interest me still include Creative Commons and local cable. When Exeter TV was proposed the model was USA law that any TV cable has to have a local option. Jeremy hunt was genuinely enthusiastic about this but not much seems to have happened. TV still important so an update would be interesting.  Creative Commons is still not well understood. If chosen as an option on YouTube for example than the clip can be mixed with something else.

I hope to find enough content to start a playlist on YouTube. If Creative Commons then there can be an edit with highlights. This clip from the Phoenix a while ago.

Also found a phone vid, other link suggestions welcome.

I guess video will be allowed at the hustings. Suggest tags are announced so that it can all be found together.

Meanwhile the Tubers studio is a great resource for Exeter. I am still working on how to combine the green screen and the area around the river and canal where soon the sun will provide lighting and video production will be quite cheap. The Boat Shed could be a useful resource as a place to store a tripod . Maybe even more production resource, not sure what they have in mind. With Jon Mahy I did some clips in the Bike Shed the last two summers. Lighting is an issue so the outdoors may solve this but some resource still needed as backup.

Adding tags to YouTube clips #13SWMA for example

This post is to show how to add tags. The occasion is the forthcoming South West Music Awards. I want to encourage people to use #13SWMA. Should be ok but needs some explanation. (The order is like this to avoid confusion with the Supporting Working Moms Act) The example in the screenshots is just to add the suggested tag to another video, about how to find Blackwells bookshop. but this should be enough as a guide. Start with the list of videos, then click the edit button

Then in edit, look for the tags. These are used in a search, so can be the same as for Twitter or Facebook. In this case thjere is a suggested tag official for Exeter University.

 I'm not quite sure what will happen tomorrow so design takes the form of readiness for various options. Chris is returning but has asked me to do the first half hour, 10 - 10.30. The Storyteller is away this week and next on some sudden festival bookings so I have offered to take over. I think there should be some stories and have found him on YouTube. But the main event is Soul Sessions Volume Two, available as a CD next Monday for the UK. Most of it is on YouTube already or at least a few tracks. I mentioned this on an internal Phonic email list and I think someone may turn up who understands how to play vinyl. It may sound obvious but requires some extra bits of kit. How many actual records will appear I don't know. The tracks go back to the '60s so I think eventually a lot of links will be discovered.

 Bill Bradley has made one error I think. Joss Stone was born in Dover but he was probably not phoning her "Dover home". Why this kind of music comes from Devon is still a bit of a mystery but the facts will sink in eventually. All we need is a credible narrative. This extract is a start-

 Who are some of your influences? When I was really young I liked a lot of female vocalists. My parents’ music collection was what I had, so they luckily have really good taste. My dad liked the Specials and Linton Kwesi Johnson, and he had a James Brown record that I stole. And my mom liked the big singers — Anita Baker, Whitney Houston, Melissa Etheridge. I really like emotion in music. Without emotion, it’s a bit wasted. 

 Joss told Andrew Marr that Teardrops was the only song on the CD she knew previously. So maybe the style is coming from Anita Baker, I shall try to play some and see how it fits. JD will turn up about ten so there could be some 80s dance. He likes Teardrops but I think Joss is trying to take the style of this back in time. I will get in some country as well. Also hope to talk about the Any High Street show at RAMM. The promotion / rights access on music is not the same as with gallery images. Discussion could take a long time and an hour and a half is not that long for music.

Linking to other video, way forward for RGB #EX1to4

I have come to realise that linking to other video is one very good option for Rougemont Glogal Broadcasting. On Sunday afternoon I did get to Princesshay in time for the ISCA Wheelchair Dancers. I loaded one clip within a couple of hours. There may be others later but I am waiting on seeing other clips. There were several cameras in Bedford Square. Today I find other video of the actual Torch I have started to llook at a viewer for all my RGB clips combined with others. It seems a fair way to go provided viewers can find the original and the context. The choice of sequence is largely up to the viewer I think. You can go off route at an point but the next one is the ISCA Wheelchair Dancers.

Radio, PR, Podcasting as topics for #likeminds in Exeter and Wild Show on Phonic FM

Next week I will be at #likeminds on the Friday but will concentrate on the Wild Show for Thursday. the broadcast is from 10 to 12 but we follow with coffee and a sort of plan for the future. Probably we will have aq guest to talk about a book and Chris will meet them at Central Station. So I will start the show and can mention anything about #likeminds that seems to fit in. Over the weekend I will try to video Chris and the ISCA Wheelchair dancers. They are part of the Olympic torch events in Princesshay. Chris also has some clips from his i-phone which need a bit of an edit but we are not yet sure how to do this on YouTube. So our level of production is fairly low. I notice several comments on the Whatleydude blog about connecting social media and television. http://whatleydude.com/2012/05/current-attempts-at-television-based-social-media-integration-are-failing-hard/ But this seems to be coming from an established tv point of view. We do have a broadcast radio but it is made up of little bits that exist in other forms as well. When it falls over we go back to txt. I speak for myself of course. I don't know if there will be a lunch meeting in the Phoenix on Thursday as part of #likeminds but if radio fits the agenda we will be not far away after about ten past 12. On Friday I hope to attend the masterclass on podcasting. We are using Soundcloud but maybe not as well as we might. It tends to be either complete shows or else short dlips. Grouping as a podcast is not something we try much. In general I hope to find out more about PR or a theory of PR that allows for social media access to events and content. The Creative Commons approach is still not well understood I find. I am sort of reverse engineering PR theory back from where I would like it as a video blogger. Wifi in Exeter suggests new forms of theatre

Because Posterous has slowed down today I am putting this post into Wifi Exeter. It seems a bit relevant as I think my form of writing assumes some wifi in Exeter or at least web access sometime the same day. Gripping Yarns happened over the weekend, some short monologues performed at the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. Last month there were writing workshops which I attended. I also wrote the beginning of a script but I could not attend the later workshops. The character was loosely based on myself and spoke about memory of the giraffe in the area now a cafe, the use of augmented reality to recreate the giraffe when viewed from the gallery and the extra performance won in a competition but about to happen offstage. I thought it was ok and the only prop needed was a tray with a QR code. Google Doc version. So this was designed to be recorded as video then linked to other video from virtual animation. On the actual day I was not allowed to do video but there was a phone camera as part of a performance. There was also a play about "Cameron Corporation" in which the Cloud did not come over very well. Mostly the web was presented as a way for corporations to steal content from the public and impose groupthink. My own guess is that social media would come over better in museums and the legitimate theatre if the people involved actually used it a bit more. There is permission to photo the long term exhibits at RAMM. So I did some of the new giraffe creations. I don't think there was much connection with Ghostwriter. I plan to have another look at Tales of Things. My sense of place could get vaguer but engagement levels could improve.

Previous post today on Tumblr but I can't get the hang of it. more on Topophobia, public realm, architecture. Gallery Jitters Started there to follow Spaces Review Group but now can't quite find it. Central St Martins has recently moved to King's cross where there are some impressive water features centred on the canal. I am reminded of the Exeter Forum. My theory is that virtual worlds have had a deeper influence for longer than is often supposed. Space design in the last decade seems to be trying to imitate an online situation where space is unlimited. But iun reality the function can get lost I think. For example a campus without a bookshop. Anyway, sorry going off topic. Please suggest some academic language on why research universities need to invest in architecture at this time.

Steve Shopper rough notes on A2D #A2DMusicExpo

In general it seems that reporting by avatars may be a way to cover issues that take more time to clear for publication if from other sources. So a blog may seem less reliable on this basis but cover more aspects of something that might have happened. This started with Source Dubious and something that might have been said by quality workers about the HR department. Twinity is still the base for this sort of thing even though the maps are still missing so all the rooms are separated. Steve Shopper returned from London to Exeter for the Analogue to Digital music expo on Saturday. He is now back in London, pictured at the Twinity London Reception area - a space much like the Phoenix in Exeter.

He tells me that the Technical Panel thought there was a "backlash from the virtual world" so this may have put Steve in a bad mood. There seems to have been a thorough look back at analog. based on the decision by Falmouth academics to accept all the analog kit once at Dartington. The advice was to study work on 4 tracks including Motown and Phil Spector. Also some strong views on current efforts to get louder. "They are sqashing the life out of everything based on the peaks." (Steve took some notes but not about who said what.)The ITU standard BS1770 may help. It is supported by iTunes. Apparently Sound on Sound magazine dropped a feature about video as it was "too technical" for most readers. Steve is wondering why they get into sound technology and assume expensive kit is better for sound if they apparently use phone cameras for video. He thinks there may be a jump coming into cheaper mobile devices and cloud services outside the studio. Apparently one remark was "with tape machines, if you can lift it without a friend, it's not professional". I asked a question about K pop. It was accepted as a modern technology but I don't know how it relates to earlier techniques. Apparently Japanese studios have not used as much base as in the UK but I don't know if this applies to K pop also. I hope this will be covered on future occasions. As well as the issues raised by Steve Shopper. He is a gadget fan so will buy almost anything that runs an app. It may turn out to be just as expensive as renting a studio.

Testing Scenechat on Speeches from Chinese New Year

WiFi Exeter has a sense of place. So I am trying out SceneChat here as well as with learn9 and animex.

Scenechat adds comments within a video timeline and connects with social media such as Facebook.

This video is speeches at the Lemon Grove during the Chinese New Year. There is a vision for the university future that could be commented on.









Only works with Facebook at the moment for links. Also comments on blog are welcome.

Otis playlist may not reach Phonic this year but still be in the cloud later

Phonic FM still relies on the Compact Disc (CD) and usb sticks etc.

One day there will be seamless real time methods for presenters to upload from home.

But meanwhile there may be some gaps. I have tried to find ways to upload songs from Otis etc but copyright is an issue. Seems ok through YouTube so you will ahve to click through or diveret to something else.

Exeter Cathedral and Billy Bragg - Free University / Tent City

So far there is no video from last week when Billy Bragg visited Occupy Exeter at the Cathedral.

The Museum opens this week, remembering Prince Albert

My guess is that Prince Albert would now be on Soundcloud and a frequent visits to Berlin. But apparently it was Queen Charlotte who introduced the Christmas tree to the UK. Stan Hacking claimed last night that most of the audience had the wrong answer.

I hope there will be more technology around the Royal Albert Memorial Museum. I did a talk with some display as part of the millenium exhibition Script to Print to Hypertext. The Hypertext was a small proportion at that time. The notes for my talk need an update but the issues are still a reasonable place to start.

I have found a couple of PDF files in my backup system and uploaded them to Scribd. More later.
